Dr. Brian R. McWhorter is a fellowship trained, board certified Orthopedic Surgeon with extensive experience and training in both routine, as well as complex joint reconstruction surgery. He has a primary focus in minimally invasive, and muscle sparring surgery of the hip, knee and shoulder. This allows his patients the opportunity to return to an active lifestyle as quickly as possible. He does this by utilizing the latest techniques, technologies and cutting edge, robotic platforms to perform procedures with more accuracy and precision. These allow him to perform minimally invasive procedures that cause less damage and injury to patient’s muscles and surrounding tissues, resulting in less pain, shorter to no hospital stays, and a quicker recovery.
Dr. McWhorter received his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University where he earned a Bachelors degree with a focus in Human Biology. He then went on to earn his medical degree from Midwestern University - Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he graduated in the top 10% of his class with Suma Cum Laude Honors.
Following medical school, Dr. McWhorter did his internship and residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Pinnacle Health System in Harrisburg, Pa. During his residency training, he spent significant time at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pa., and Children’s Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta, Ga doing extensive training in Orthopedic Trauma and Pediatric Orthopedics, respectively. At the conclusion of his residency training, Dr. McWhorter’s Orthopedic Board Exam score ranked in the top 5 in the country.
At the conclusion of his residency training, Dr. McWhorter elected to undertake additional specialized training in Adult Joint Reconstruction at the Arizona Institute of Bone and Joint Disorders, under the tutelage of world-renowned joint surgeon, Dr. Anthony “Tony” Hedley.
Dr. McWhorter has now, practiced in the Phoenix Area, and the East Valley, since 2011 where he has been awarded the Phoenix Top Doctor’s Award in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and recently for 2024.
In addition to loving his work as an Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. McWhorter’s 1st love is spending his free time with his family, including his beautiful wife of 26 years, DeAnn, and their 4 amazing children. Brianna, his oldest, is married and loving life as a new bride and dental hygienist, with her husband Paden. His oldest son, Brian Jr. reminds him of himself having fun as a new college student. While Benjamin, a high school senior, and Braelynn, his 12-year-old pre-teen, keep him and DeAnn constantly entertained at home.
Dr. McWhorter was born in Michigan and raised in Southern California. His parents raised him correctly, as a University of Michigan athletics fan. He continues to enjoy UofM sports by watching, attending games when able, and collecting UofM memorabilia.
